Mommy Needs A Rest Time Too

Mommy Needs A Rest Time Too

Quiet time.  I am taking a little break in the midst of my day.  My children are resting.  I must rest too.  Even a few minutes can reset my calm button.  You know what I’m talking about!

So, I sit down with my bible to pour some life-giving truth deep into my heart.  God’s word is filled with SO MUCH!   Where do I start?  Which book do I read in?  It can be overwhelming sometimes to hold this 2000+ page book in your hands.  But, every morsel of God’s word is fit to satisfy our hungry souls.

Truly and honestly, turn to ANY page and it will fill up the God sized hole in your life.  His truth speaks from every word.  Every page. Every story.

Hebrew 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (NASB)

Wow!  God’s word is living and active.  It means that His word is ALIVE!  What does it mean to be alive?  It means it has life!  It is growing!  Moving!  It has a spirit!  The Holy Spirit to be exact!  And it will transform my life.  It will transform your life!

Oh, to be refreshed by God’s word means to have His word settle down deep into my soul, to fill up the empty parts.  To be given a new spirit, a new sense of life.  A new source of energy!  There are no other words in this world that can do THAT!

God tells us in Hebrews 4:12 that His word is active and moving and able to move down deep into your soul.  It will go deeper than anything else can in this world to uncover the ugly parts, and to restore and transform our hearts into something new and usable!

I know this verse.  I have heard it many times.  But today when I read that verse I was awakened to the two verses above it.

Hebrews 4:10-11 “For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.  Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.”

We are to be refreshed and restored through God’s word.  But FIRST we must stop our work and REST.  But we aren’t to just rest, we are to be diligent to enter that rest.  God is commanding us to rest.  He is giving you permission to stop what you are doing and sit with him for awhile.  If you needed an invitation, here it is!

Life as a mom is busy.  We have A LOT of work to be done.  But God is commanding us to REST!  It isn’t something we do if we have time.  We are to protect it.  Diligently seek to do it.  Because it is only through that time of rest that we will be able to read the Word of God, to let it pierce us and change our hearts.  Because all of us need some piercing.  Not the kind that penetrates our skin, but the Word of God that penetrates our souls.  The kind that works from the inside out to give us the strength and power we need to be the moms, wives, sisters, and daughters we need to be.

Today, during my kids rest time, I stopped what I was doing.  I left dirty dishes on the counter and laundry piled high to sit with God.  To rest in Him.  To let His word pierce my heart.  I set the timer for 15 minutes so they knew when rest time was over.  And I rested.

And I was refreshed.  God’s word isn’t complicated.  He gave the same instruction to Martha.  “You are worried and bothered about so many things but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

One thing.  I can do one thing.

And don’t miss the second part…”so that no one will fall through following the same example of disobedience.”  Your rest time tells your kids that their rest time is important.  When they see you reading God’s word, guess what?  They will learn that it is important that they read their bible.  It’s not genius.  It’s God’s truth.  And it just makes sense.

So my dear friend, this day, will you choose to stop and REST?  Will you let the word of God penetrate you deeply?

Go set the timer in your kids rooms for 15 minutes and grab a coffee and your bible.  You will be ever so glad you did.

Sometimes it is so hard for me to take time for myself. I catch myself feeling guilty. I don’t know where that feeling originates. Nobody ever told me not to pause for myself. You are so right! God has commanded us to take time to be still. I like your timer idea. I need to implement a timer in my life!

I think…no, I know that I need to take time to rest the right way. I rest through out the day but I am not including God in that rest. Would explain a lot lately, but that’s another story.
I think that I will start a family rest time right before dinner time. Where we all just sit with a book, I will start the example with my Bible, and set a timer. All electronics will be off and no one can touch them until the timer goes off.

Thanks for being real & sharing. Love reading your words 🙂

I love the timer. It’s easy to sidetracked and forget about rest time. But oh, how important. I pray that you will find solace in a few minutes to yourself with God!
